Associate Membership in MTVFD

Associate Membership Overview

The Associate membership option is for individuals who hold active membership with another fire department. If you have an interest in helping to staff our stations, you can join as an Associate Member. To be eligible to apply, you must provide certification from the Chief of your home fire department that you are an active member in good standing and have at least one year of service with that Fire Department.

As an Associate Member, you may function at either the Support, Exterior or Interior Firefighter status, and must show that you have completed the minimum level of training for desired level of service. You will have to complete the Marshall Twp. Volunteer Fire Department (MTVFD) orientation process before responding to calls. Associate Members are encouraged to participate in Marshall Twp. Volunteer Fire Department training but are not required to do so.

Associate membership requires membership in good standing at your home department, at least one year of service, training that meets or exceeds MTVFD training minimums and acceptance as an Associate Brigade Member by the MTVFD Chief Officer.

Associate Brigade members are expected to respond to a minimum number calls or spend a minimum time on station in a Qualification Year to remain eligible.

Stipends will be paid. Details are available from the MTVFD Chief.

Associate Membership Qualification Requirements, Rights, and Responsibilities.

Associate Members

  • shall provide certification from their home Chief of membership in good standing.
  • have at least one year of service at their home department.
  • must complete training that meets or exceeds MTVFD training minimums. Acceptance as an Associate Brigade Member is subject to the Chief’s review.
  • must respond to a minimum of 10 calls or at least two hours of time on station on 10 separate occasions in a Qualification Year to remain eligible.
  • shall understand that Associate Members are not required and are not automatically Company Members and as such do not have voting rights on Company or Brigade matters. Associate Members may apply to be Company members subject to the requirements of the Company Membership Policy.
  • will be considered firefighters and will not retain any officer rankings from their home departments while on MTVFD fairgrounds.
  • shall be eligible for Workman’s Compensation and AD&D insurance coverage from MTVFD for MTVEFD incidents.
  • may use personal equipment and gear provided by their home department. If their home department cannot, or will not, provide gear for the associate member, MTVFD will provide gear for use at MTVFD incidents and training.
  • must use approved Personal Protective Equipment
  • must follow all MTVFD Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG) 

    About Station Associates:

    • Associates are a valuable resource to providing fire and rescue services to the residents and guests of Marshall Township.
    • Qualified Associates are welcome from neighboring departments known to MTVFD.
    • Current Criminal Background and Child Abuse clearances are also required.
    • Medical qualification is a plus, but not required (CPR is required).
    • Associates must be accepted by the MTVFD Chief Officer.
    • Associate applications will be reviewed with your Chief Officer.
    • Associates are not members of MTVFD and as such are not eligible for any benefits of department membership.
    • MTVFD turnout gear may be available, depending on our inventory.
    • Orientation prior to station staffing may be required.

    About Marshall Township VFD.

    • Responsible for fire and rescue services in Marshall Township (Allegheny County, PA) and mutual aid to surrounding communities.
    • No EMS or QRS.
    • Approximately 500 calls per year.
    • Apparatus: 2 engines, 1 heavy rescue, 1 air truck, 1 brush truck, 1 UTV, 1 traffic pickup.
    • Two stations:  270 Northgate Drive (Warrendale) and 465 Knob Road (Marshall Township Park).
    • Both stations have a day room and kitchen available to associates.

    The Associate application is attached above. This form may be printed, completed, and returned to the Chief for consideration. Copies of certificates and clearances will be required prior to the first day of station staffing.
